荷蘭垂耳兔據悉是由荷蘭的Adrian De Cock先生髮展出來的。在1949年，他以迷你兔（侏儒兔）與英國垂耳兔所生的後代，與法國垂耳兔交配，嘗試生產縮小版的法國垂耳兔，因此它誕生的年代，比起法國垂耳兔、英國垂耳兔晚了許多。一般所說的迷你兔，則是1970年代發展出來的，在1980年ARBA（Amerian Rabbit Breeder's Association）的展覽會中，才獲得公認的新品種。
